"Within half an hour, on this Saturday afternoon, TJ Haase Winery packed about 50 people into the newly-built establishment for free wine tastings and food that owners Cathy and Doug Haase had to offer. The opening of TJ Haase Winery — which sits next to the owners’ home — is a dream come true for the couple and the name they chose for their new business is also significant. TJ is the initials of Doug’s son, Tyler Jacob, who was passed away in 2010. " (Terre Haute Tribune Star)
“We opened this winery to keep his memory alive and keep our actual dreams alive also.”
It has always been a dream to have a winery and live the Italian heritage through wine making. As a young boy, Doug would help an Italian lady grind grapes and stir the barrel while she made wine. Her inspiration, and the Italian heritage of his mother, kept our drive to someday serve wine to the neighboring community where we have lived all our lives. We have engaged in many wine adventures, traveling to several wineries throughout the country, and reeled in a great deal of knowledge from The Finger Lakes, in New York. All of this, helping to make our dream a reality. We worked closely with Indiana State University - Scott School of Business - creating a business plan and financial projections to back our dream. With both of us having full time jobs and plans for the winery to be our retirement project, it was very intense when our dream became a reality sooner than we expected.
We took things from each winery that we liked and used our own special touch as well. We have a warm inviting tasting room and atmosphere, as well as a designated area in the back where we make the wine. The ingredients; grapes, juices, fruit and other products used in the wine are obtained from Wabash Valley growers as well. We get our grapes from the Little Vermillion Vineyard, in Cayuga Indiana, owned by the Wesch family. Our winery offers many different varieties, including dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet, and sweet wines. It also offers both red and white wines. What makes us different is we put our own personal spin on the building and on the wine. We built the structure that houses the winery; we created our own recipes, and brainstormed all the labels. Every label has a story that we share with your wine tasting experience. In addition to wine, we sell other items; including T-shirts, pastas, soup mixes, dip mixes, sauces and candy. The facility can also be rented for events and we have monthly events; such as "Sips & Strokes" (our version of wine and canvas), acoustic night, and weather permitting, we have outdoor events and a place for you to sit and relax while you enjoy your wine and spend time with family and friends. We are a very family friendly atmosphere, everyone is welcome and this includes 21 and under.
We hope our new business will inspire entrepreneurship in Vermillion County and give others the inspiration to begin their small business journey . We want our customers to come in and relax, forget about the stress, enjoy yourself, and drink some fine wine.
Thanks for visiting our site and we hope to see you soon at TJ Haase Winery!
On May 26th, 2017 we began our journey with craft beer. We introduced the Shaggy Ass Brewery to our adventure. All beer, just like our wine, is made on sight. We began with the Shaggy Dog, an American Pale Ale and the Shaggy Pup, an American Pale Ale Light.
